Mastering Humidor Etiquette - Handling Cigars

Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado or new to the world of premium cigars, understanding proper handling and care is essential for preserving the quality and integrity of these exquisite products. Let’s delve into the dos and don’ts of cigar handling in a retail business to ensure a pleasurable experience for all.
Handling Cigars in Cellophane:
Correct Way - When handling cigars still wrapped in cellophane, approach with care. Gently grasp the cigar without applying excessive pressure, ensuring not to crush or deform the wrapper. Inspect the cigar gently feeling it between your fingers, feeling for any irregularities in texture or firmness.
Wrong Way - Avoid rough handling or squeezing cigars tightly, as this can damage the delicate wrapper and affect the overall smoking experience. Refrain from tearing or ripping the cellophane, as it serves as a protective barrier for the cigar. Refrain from squeezing the **** out of the middle of a cigar thinking your know what you’re feeling for when truthfully most of your do not. Mishandling can lead to unraveling, cracked cigars, damage, product loss for the retailer and compromised quality for someone who picks it up and buys it after you just compromised the construction quality. Don’t try to smell a cigar through the cellophane in a room full of cigars. You can’t do it!
Handling Cigars Without Cellophane:
Correct Way - When handling unwrapped cigars, exercise caution to avoid damaging the exposed wrapper. Hold the cigar delicately between your fingers. Handle the cigar primarily over the band to minimize contact with the exposed tobacco to prevent transferring oils and impurities.
Wrong Way - Never handle unwrapped cigars carelessly or roughly, as this can lead to wrapper damage and affect the cigar’s flavor profile. Avoid touching the cigar with dirty or oily hands, as this can compromise its integrity and detract from the smoking experience. Asses the cigar the same way as you would one in cellophane by gently squeezing the foot. Never touch a cigar not in cellophane (or one in cellophane) to your face, most retinae’s will be making you purchase that cigar. Want to smell this one not in cellophane? Smell the foot (the end you light) at a distance of a 3 inch minimum. Don‘t cough on the cigar or sneeze on it. Unfortunately we see it happen and can’t sell that cigar now, which means less to rebuy cigars for our customers.
Respect for Other Customers and Products:
It’s crucial to recognize that proper humidor etiquette extends beyond personal enjoyment to respect for fellow enthusiasts and the products they may wish to purchase. The primary cause of damage to cigars in the humidor often stems from careless handling by other customers, costing cigar retailers money due to unsellable damaged product. To maintain the integrity of the cigars and ensure a pleasant experience for all:
• Handle with Care - Refrain from haphazardly tossing cigars back into their boxes or mishandling them during inspection. Treat each cigar with the respect it deserves.
