70/70 Rule? Nope…Not Anymore!

70/70 Rule? Nope…Not Anymore!

Listen up, folks! If you're part of the cigar aficionado community, you've probably heard the “golden rule” of cigar storage: 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 70% humidity. But let me tell you something, that's as outdated as a rotary phone in the digital age. Today, I'm here to set the record straight, to give you the insider knowledge on how to truly elevate your cigar experience.

Why Cooler is Better, But Not Too Cool:

First off, let's talk temperature. You might think, "Hey, 70 degrees sounds comfy, like a nice day outside." But here's the deal: cigars aren't people. They don't need comfort; they need preservation. Cigars thrive in environments cooler than room temperature.

Why? Because cooler temperatures slow down the aging process, preserving the flavors and aromas of your cigars. But, and this is crucial, we're not talking about putting your cigars in the fridge or on ice. Too cold, and you risk ruining your precious sticks. Aim for a temperature around 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. This range keeps your cigars in a sweet spot where they age gracefully, not rapidly.

Humidity - Less is More:

Now, let's bust another myth: 70% humidity. This was the standard back in the day, but here's where science and experience have led us to a better path. My recommendation is 65% humidity is where it's at. Why? Because at this level, you're minimizing the risk of mold and preventing cigars from becoming too soft or too dry.

At 65%, your cigars maintain their structural integrity, ensuring they burn evenly and taste just as the master blender intended. Plus, it's easier to manage. Too much humidity, and you're playing with fire (or rather, mold), too little, and you're smoking sawdust.

The Humidor Experience - Feel the Chill:

When you walk into a top-notch cigar shop like Smoke and Joe Cigar Lounge, you should feel a difference the moment you step into the humidor. That chill in the air isn't just for show; it's a sign that those cigars are being stored in an environment designed for their peak condition.

If you don't feel that coolness, you might want to question staff about those cigars. Room temperature in a cigar lounge humidor if simply not correct. At Smoke and Joe, we maintain an average of 68 degrees and 65% humidity*. Trust me, when we say your cigar will be better, we've got the science and the taste buds of enjoying a few more cigars to back it up. Believe me, I’m your daily guinea pig, testing the cigars to ensure they're at their best.

Experiment at Home:

Don't be afraid to play with your home humidor. Room placement, and household temperature settings (to the best of your ability). Adjust, test, and taste. Remember, cigars are an experience, and like any good experience, it's about getting it right.

So, forget the old 70/70 rule. Embrace a new set of “rules”, and let your cigars thank you with every puff.

Remember…

At Smoke and Joe Cigar Lounge, we're not just selling cigars; we're curating an experience. We're here to educate, to elevate, and to ensure that every cigar you enjoy is nothing short of spectacular. So, next time you're looking to stock up, remember: cooler, drier, and always with that chill in the air. That's the way to truly savor the art of the cigar.

Stay tuned, stay cool, and keep enjoying those sticks the right way. We’ll see you here!
